SUMMARY:Citizen's Labor and Energy Coalition 40th Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Friends and former activists/leaders/organizers in CLEC and Citizen Action—\n  \nIn the midst of these challenging and inspiring times—we think it is time for a reunion for those who helped to build the Citizen Labor Energy Coalition or CLEC (and allied organizations\, like Citizen Action and Energy Action). \n  \nWe will gather in Washington\, DC at the National Education Association building (NEA: 1201 16th Street\, NW\, Washington\, DC 20036) on WEDNESDAY\, DECEMBER 4\, 2019; with a reception (with heavy hors d’oeuvres) and an hour-long Program.  The entire event will be from 5:30 – 8:30 pm\, beginning with a Happy Hour\, prior to the Program starting at 6 p.m.. We will also be acknowledging those who are no longer with us\, including Barbara Shailor\, among others.  (Thanks to the NEA and John Stocks for contributing their beautiful space for this gathering.)  Program to follow. \n  \nCLEC was a remarkable organization that began in 1978\, led by President Bill Winpisinger of the Machinists Union\, along with President Jerry Wurf of AFSCME\, President Doug Fraser of UAW; and President JC Turner of the Operating Engineers and the emerging statewide organizations\, plus various public interest and faith organizations. \n  \nCitizen Labor Energy Coalition not only won impressive victories on energy issues for consumers\, it also built an alliance among labor\, community and faith organizations that had been fractured during the politics of the Cold War.  Building these alliances state wide (as opposed to only national or community groups)\, allowed for the creation of the current progressive state power infrastructure.  In alliance with Citizen Action\, and Energy Action\, this became key to the growth of multi-issue grassroots organizations.  After 1980\, with the entry into electoral politics\, these alliances advanced the integration of political and issue-organizing operations at a time when this was both rare and controversial. \n  \nThis reunion will be an opportunity to reconnect with old friends\, pass on the history and legacy of this work and support those who are working on these issues today. We hope you can join us. \n  \nPlease RSVP https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc2cCaV_qNVeVffjv1imSJmrt_5jiqamnPTnIBNFCCMXJBOnQ/viewform \n  \nPlease share widely with others who were involved or would be interested to know about this event and share a memory of those times\, if possible. \n  \nSincerely\, \n\nIra Arlook \nHeather Booth \nLiz Burke \nBob Brandon \nBarbara Helmick \nCathy Hurwit \nSkip Laitner \nMike Lux\n  \n \n

SUMMARY:EESI & WRI Briefing - Practical Solutions to Adapt to Effects of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Delay and Pay or Plan and Prosper – Practical Solutions to Adapt to the Effects of Climate Change\n\nFriday\, November 1\n9:30 am – 11:00 am \nRoom 2318\, Rayburn House Office Building\nIndependence Avenue SW and South Capitol Street SW \n\n\n\n \n\nPlease RSVP to expedite check-in \nA live webcast will be streamed at 9:30 AM EDT at www.eesi.org/livecast (wireless connection permitting) \nThe Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) invite you to a briefing on the Global Commission on Adaptation’s Flagship Report and Year of Action for climate adaptation. The Commission\, which is chaired by Former U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon\, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates\, and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva\, seeks to accelerate adaptation action by elevating its political visibility and focusing on concrete solutions. In September 2019\, the Commission launched its flagship report\, Adapt Now: A Global Call for Leadership on Climate Resilience\, which outlines a roadmap for scaling-up climate adaptation in the United States and abroad in order to safeguard communities and economies from the impacts of climate change. In particular\, the report emphasizes the investment potential of climate adaptation initiatives. \nThe report also kickstarts a Year of Action on climate adaptation\, starting in late 2019 and going through 2020\, to advance the recommendations from the flagship report which include eight major areas of focus—agriculture\, cities\, finance\, disaster risk management\, nature-based solutions\, infrastructure\, water\, and locally-led action. This concentrated effort will help accelerate adaptation action and support\, thereby improving human well-being and resulting in better\, more sustainable economic development and security for all. \nBriefing speakers will highlight key elements of the report and share how federal legislators can engage with the Year of Action for climate adaptation.

SUMMARY:ACEEE 2019 Nat'l Conference on Energy Efficiency as a Resource
DESCRIPTION:Radisson Blu Minneapolis Downtown\nMinneapolis\, MN\nOctober 15\, 2019 to October 17\, 2019\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreliminary Program | Keynote Speakers | Registration | EFEX Workshop | Accommodations | Sponsorship Opportunities | Past EER Conferences \nIn October 2019 in Minneapolis\, ACEEE will host its tenth National Conference on Energy Efficiency as a Resource (EER)\, the premier US convening conference on efficiency as a utility system resource. Held every other year since 2001\, the conference highlights the latest developments in the design and delivery of customer energy efficiency programs\, and in the regulatory mechanisms that help make them possible. Look for a robust discussion of the many issues facing utilities as they acquire and integrate this resource into their planning and operation. \nUtilities and system planners now face increasing expectations from policymakers\, regulators and customers. There are challenges to integrate technological advancements\, modernize the grid\, and meet increasing energy and environmental goals… all while constraining costs. These challenges bring opportunities to better integrate energy efficiency to meet those needs. EER19 will have a robust discussion of the many issues facing utilities as they acquire and integrate this resource into their planning and operation. \nLikely participants:\nUtilities and program administrators\, regulatory commissions\, state government\, consultants\, manufacturers\, environmental organizations\, consumer groups\, and research institutes. \nClick here to view a list of organizations that participated in EER’s 2017 conference.

SUMMARY:Society of Environmental Journalists Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Welcome Back to Colorado for #SEJ2019!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to Fort Collins and Northern Colorado\, where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains. Here in Colorado\, water flows off both sides of the Continental Divide toward both the East and West Coasts\, so\, one way or another\, our land-locked state affects everyone’s life across the U.S. We hope this year’s meeting fosters your own connections among lofty peaks and open views. \nThis conference represents a homecoming of sorts for SEJ. Our first annual conference\, in 1991\, occurred just down the road in Boulder. Now\, as SEJ returns to Colorado\, environmental matters that are front and center in this “purplish” state are becoming prominent presidential campaign issues leading into the 2020 election. Many presumptive candidates are actively addressing climate change\, energy policy and biodiversity conservation. (Hopefully\, some of them will be with us in “FoCo.”) \nHere in Colorado\, we’re addressing many of the challenges that communities throughout the country are experiencing. Since that first SEJ conference 28 years ago\, the population of Colorado’s Front Range\, stretching from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins\, has exploded\, adding millions of new residents. This growth challenges communities and resource managers who must balance demands for more development and for securing human and environmental health. This impossible juggling act is playing out in many ways\, as you’ll see and learn. Some newly built neighborhoods butt right up against oil and gas wells amidst the state’s drilling frenzy; a half-dozen major dam and water-development projects are under consideration; the surging numbers of residents in the area are overtaxing open spaces — essentially loving nature to death; in the last decade megafires and floods have raged through communities\, destroying lives and homes and costing millions of dollars. \nLike everywhere\, this level of economic growth and expanded resource extraction can often conflict with environmental health and sustainability goals. \nIn response to these challenges\, Colorado is also forging ahead with innovation and collaborative solutions to both local and global problems. The state\, communities\, utilities and research institutions and universities — including our host\, Colorado State University — are leading the way on renewable energy research and development\, water conservation and management\, and climate science and policy around the world. Federal research and management agencies — with offices in Fort Collins and along Colorado’s Front Range — are also leaders in advancing environmental science\, research and policy. Further\, many rapidly growing towns and cities are aggressively protecting natural areas to preserve wildlife habitat\, working farmlands and open spaces. \nAll these dizzying developments make Fort Collins an ideal place for this year’s conference\, and for examining the delicate relationships between people and the environment. This year’s conference focuses on climate change\, energy development\, water scarcity and politics\, public lands management\, agriculture and social justice (and injustice). These are themes and topics central to this region — and to the rest of the country and the world. \nConference workshops will offer attendees opportunities to learn reporting tools and skills for covering climate change\, public lands and tribal affairs. Tours will take you from the Continental Divide to the plains\, from forests and rivers to feedlots and former nuclear-weapons plants and into some of the most well-known environmental-research facilities in the world. \nDid we forget to mention the craft beers and bicycle lanes and trails? And Rocky Mountain oysters? Also\, remember that a “Rocky Mountain high” is not just the (legal) cannabis one\, it’s also the mile-high headache you’ll get if you don’t drink plenty of water when traveling from sea level. So\, remember to hydrate\, so you can drink up and\, well… whatever. \nWelcome to Colorado! \nSEJ’s 2019 Conference Chairs: \nSusan Moran\, freelance print journalist; producer and host of KGNU’s science show\, “How On Earth” \nJoshua Zaffos\, correspondent\, High Country News\, and environmental communications instructor\, Colorado State University

SUMMARY:Youth Climate Strike
DESCRIPTION:YOUTH CLIMATE STRIKE\nThis September\, millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. \nOur house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone. \nWhy go on Climate Strike?\n\nOur house is on fire. The climate crisis is an emergency but we’re not acting like it. People everywhere are at risk if we let oil\, coal and gas companies continue to pour more fuel on the fire.\nOur hotter planet is already hurting millions of people. If we don’t act now to transition fairly and swiftly away from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy access for all\, the injustice of the climate crisis will only get worse.\nWe need to act right now to stop burning fossil fuels and ensure a rapid energy revolution with equity\, reparations and climate justice at its heart.\nBut it’s going to take all of us working together to succeed. Join the Climate Strikes starting on September 20 – three days out from the UN’s climate emergency summit and continuing on September 27.  \nMillions of us will walk out from home\, work\, school or university to declare a climate emergency and show our politicians what action in line with climate science and justice means.\nThe climate crisis won’t wait\, so neither will we. \n\nWhat difference will it make?\n\nThese Climate Strikes won’t solve the climate crisis alone. What this moment can do is demonstrate that people are no longer willing to continue with business as usual. The urgency of the climate crisis requires a new approach and a just response centred on human rights\, equity\, and justice.\nGreta Thunberg’s lone protest caught the world’s attention last year\, and has spread to millions of school children who are sounding the alarm. Now it’s everyone’s turn to stand with young people and show world leaders the people power demanding climate justice. September’s climate strikes will kickstart a huge wave of action and renewed ambition all over the world. \n\nCan adults join in?\n\nAbsolutely! School strikers have invited everyone to walk out in solidarity with them on Friday September 20 and 27. This is a global moment to show politicians everywhere that our movement is growing from strength to strength and we won’t stop until we get climate justice for everyone. This is only the beginning. \n\n  \n  \n  \nhttps://globalclimatestrike.net/

SUMMARY:International Conference on Environmental Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Save event \nOn behalf of the Organising Committee we are delighted to invite you to participate in the International Conference on Environmental Psychology: ‘Protecting People and Planet through Social and Behavioural Science’ to be held in Plymouth (the UK’s ‘Ocean City’).  \nThis international conference is being organised under the auspices of the Division of Environmental Psychology of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) to promote the science and practice of applied psychology and to facilitate scientific exchange and communication on themes relevant to the increasingly policy-recognised field of environmental psychology. \nSeveral inspirational keynote talks will represent not just environmental psychology but also related disciplines and environmental policymaking with the deliberate intention of discussing how the environmental psychology community can best translate its rigorous science into meaningful change. As Environmental and Applied Psychologists at this conference we hope to make a contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For many of these SDGs\, understanding the human dimension (e.g. research on perceptions\, motivations\, behaviours\, people-environment interactions etc) is absolutely crucial. \nVisit the conference webpage for more information
